Deportation, also known as "removal" in legal terms, occurs when the federal government orders that an illegal immigrant be removed from the United States. Deportation occurs for various reasons, but usually happens after a violation of criminal or immigration laws.

Visa holders need to be ready to prove that they are entering the United States for permissible reasons and that they intend to leave in accordance with the terms of their visa. In situations of inspections at the United States border, however, foreign nationals can sometimes be determined “inadmissible” and will not be allowed entry into the United States. Those people are normally either allowed to withdraw their applications for admission into the United States or are simply denied entry into the United States and must leave immediately.

The most common reasons that visa holders (non-permanent citizens) are deported or removed from the United States are if they came into the country without valid entry documents or inspection, or if they were allowed entry legally with a visa, but then remained in the country after their visa expired.

There are a number of situations that can result in entry refusal to the United States. Permanent citizens who have remained outside of the United States for an extended period of time should expect to provide evidence that they had intentions to return to the United States throughout the duration of their absence.

Green card holders that apply for U.S. citizenship could face potential deportation, since a background check is conducted as part of the naturalization process. Withdrawing an application for citizenship does not stop potential deportation if that individual has already been placed into removal proceedings. One of the most common reasons that a green card holder is deported, however, is by breaking the law.
