Speakers announced to a group of lobbyists and corporate individuals at a panel discussion named “Immigration and American Competitiveness: The Challenge Ahead” that other nations are now able to maintain brilliant and gifted engineers and scientists more successfully than the United States due to a flawed immigration structure, and that United States law officials need to quickly take action in order to remedy the situation.
According to the Center for Immigration Policy, the amount of H-1B visas allotted annually is capped at 65,000 visas. Chief Executive Officer and Chamber President Thomas J. Donohue said knowledgeable and intelligent foreigners have a lot to bring to the table for employers in the United States, and commented on the huge amount of growth between the Latin American and Mexican economies in recent years.
A complete immigration reform bill that consisted of some recent provisions disappeared after a 2007 Senate vote, amongst criticisms that it proposed amnesty to illegal aliens, which that bill also consisted of.
A 2010 report from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce anticipated that the United States work force would have 3 million less experienced employees than occupations available by 2018.
